Wood species

Here you will find a selection of high quality wood species and wood substitutes that are ideal for a variety of craft projects. Discover the unique properties and applications of English Boxwood, Castello Boxwood, Dark Boxwood, Central African Ebony and Berdani's Dark Paper.
  • English Boxwood (Buxus Sempervirens):
English Boxwood is among the densest and finest woods in the world. It is excellent for bringing out all the finest textures. Instruments with a brilliant and at the same time warm sound can be made from this wood. Our English boxwood is offered traditionally dyed or untreated and is aged for over 20 years, heavy and has a slightly oily surface.
  • Castello Boxwood - Calycophyllum multiflorum:
Castello boxwood is similar to European boxwood in its processing characteristics and has a uniform, fine texture. However, in comparison, it is more inconspicuous in color and tends to be light brown in color. With a large trunk diameter and more defect-free texture than the common boxwood, Castello boxwood is ideal for recorders, parquet, furniture and woodturning. We offer a natural coloring that is gentle on the wood and does not require chemical stains, alkalis or acids.
  • Dark Boxwood (Rosewood Substitute):
Dark Boxwood is an alternative to Rosewood and has similar working characteristics to European Boxwood. Again, we use our unique chemical-free dyeing process that preserves the natural character of the wood. Dark Boxwood can be used as an environmentally friendly substitute for rosewood.
  • Central African Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora):
Ebony is known for its heaviness and hardness. It is well suited for turning, carving, planing and polishing. Our carefully stored Central African Ebony is graded by weight and tonal characteristics and finely sanded with linseed oil and polished with wax.
  • Berdani's Dark Paper (ebony substitute made from recycled paper and resin):
Berdani's Dark Paper was developed as a sustainable alternative to ebony. This composite of recycled paper and resin looks like fine ebony and offers the same hardness and density. It is heat and stain resistant, resistant to moisture and perspiration, and 100% ecodegradable. Berdani's Dark Paper can be worked immediately with conventional violin making tools without long storage times.
  • Sonowood:
Sonowood is an environmentally friendly alternative for building musical instruments. Made from 100% local wood, it offers a sustainable solution in place of endangered tropical woods such as ebony and rosewood, whose stocks are in steep decline due to global overexploitation. With Sonowood, musicians can use high-quality materials that achieve the valued physical-mechanical properties of tropical wood without legal restrictions or ethical concerns. The technology behind Sonowood, developed at ETH Zurich and now manufactured in Switzerland by Swiss Wood Solutions, compresses native woods such as spruce, maple and walnut to one-third of their original volume. The resulting material is particularly hard and strong, with a high sonic velocity, resulting in excellent sound properties. Instruments made from Sonowood are richer in overtones and faster in response. This sustainable material also contributes to biodiversity conservation and is always available.
